What is conditional design?
Workshop
Example-
source http://glia.ca/meanderings-wordpress/design
The first stage of the workshop was to get into groups of 4 and attempt to draw the prefect circle.
Rules
-Group must contain 4 people

-Each take in turn to add to the circle

-Take 1 minute each time to draw the circle

-each time making it bigger than the previous circle
1.The Perfect Circle
We followed the rules correctly and produced a circle which was almost perfect but not quite. We sometimes found that we had too much time and then other times we didn't have enough time and so some of the circles were rushed.
2.Hatching
The second stage of the workshop was a more advanced version of conditional design and needed and initial setup.
Initial Setup
• Play with four players.

• Each player as a colored pen: red, green, blue and black.

• Each player places a dot on the sheet at an arbitrary position but
not further than 10 cm from each other.

• The players take turns
Rules
-Take in Turns to connect a line

-Once 3 lines meet fill in with lines

-20 minutes to complete
Time-lapse of the Hatching conditional design
With this game we sometimes got a bit confused with the rules. The result still came out well however I'm not sure we followed the rules 100%.
3.The Beach
The 3rd stage of conditional design workshop was to create a piece called the beach using just dots
Rules
-Initially place one dot on the page

-Take in turns to place a dot

-Each time place a dot in where there is the most space
This conditional design was done very quickly, as soon as the next person had gone, someone had to place a dot immediately afterwards.
4.Fluxfold
The final task was the game Fluxfold. Unfortunately my group could not get the hang of this conditional design.

Conditional Design Manifesto
Process
The process is the product.
The most important aspects of a process are time, relationship and change. The process produces formations rather than forms.
We search for unexpected but correlative, emergent patterns.
Even though a process has the appearance of objectivity, we realize the fact that it stems from subjective intentions.

Logic
Logic is our tool.
Logic is our method for accentuating the ungraspable. A clear and logical setting emphasizes that which does not seem to t within it.
We use logic to design the conditions through which the processcan take place.
Design conditions using intelligible rules.
Avoid arbitrary randomness.
Difference should have a reason.
Use rules as constraints.
Constraints sharpen the perspective on the process and stimulate play within the limitations.
Input
The input is our material.
Input engages logic and activates and in uences the process. Input should come from our external and complex environment: nature, society and its human interactions.

Looking at these images and reading the information from the source, they all follow relatively simple rules. After a bit more research i am going to attempt to create my own conditional design. I will possibly use members of the public or friends and family as the people to play the game.

I really like both of these videos and how they work. They have taken conditional design to 3D. if i were to choose Conditional design for my final project, i would possible use a 3D approach to it. Taking it away from 2 dimensional is really interesting and inspiring.

Rules
- Players 2

-Using a ruler draw a straight line in the middle of an A4 piece of paper

-one side is for each player

-attempt to draw a straight line 1cm apart from the previous line

-5 seconds to complete each line

-Once you reach the edge of the paper it is player 2's turn
The Straight line
The Extra Circle
Rules
- Players 2

-Start with a perfect circle in the centre

-Take in turns to draw an as perfect circle as you can 1cm apart from the previous circle

-take 10 seconds for each circle

-Stop when you reach the end of the page
Opposite Right Angle
Rules
- Players 2

-Start with a right angle in the centre of and A4 piece of paper

-Take in turn to add a line but must be a right angle and in a different direction to the pervious one

-stop when you can't go or reach the end of the page

This conditional design is interesting, it shows who has greater technique in drawing straight lines and is good fun to play with 2 people. This deign could be tweaked slightly and have more time to draw the line. what would be interesting is if was done with more people. I think using the 2 different colours works well because you can easily see 2 people have played the game.
This conditional design is very similar to the one we did in class. There area few differences which has created a different effect, it also didn't take as long to create. This game produced a interesting effect. it was harder than the other one because by the time you got to the end drawing the circle in 10 seconds was really hard.
I don't think this design worked as well as the others, the same colour pen makes its less interesting. It is also confusing when you reach another line if you aren't paying attention.
